About Me
Both Elden Ring and Dark Souls 2 eschew intricately connected, almost Metroidvania design in favour of more expansive and varied worlds. One of the reasons I struggle to go back to Dark Souls 3 is how uninspired the visuals are. There are certainly stand-out moments, but for the most part, it just feels like more of what the original game already did. Cathedral after cathedral, a couple of castles, and the odd sewer. There were very few moments that gave me a reason to stop and take in my surroundi
It may not be a full-on open world in the same way Elden Ring is, but Dark Souls 2 gives players a sense of agency that evokes a similar feeling of freedom. The areas in Dark Souls 2 don't overlap the way they do in Dark Souls, which for many was a point against the game, but I actually liked the greater breadth at the outset. The world felt vast and expansive, despite not technically being an open world. Elden Ring takes a similar approach, going for a sprawling overworld over the labyrinthine structure of most other FromSoftware games. It can be a little daunting, but there is a certain magic in striking out in whichever direction you see fit in search of advent
Remember stepping out of a cave and seeing Heide's Tower of Flame for the first time?. The sunlight on the sea and the crumbling ruins inspired a genuine sense of wonder. The rest of the game was no different. The epic drizzle-soaked ascent to Drangleic Castle, the hauntingly beautiful Shrine of Amana, and the imposing decrepitude of the Lost Bastille all made me stop and st
The connection between Dark Souls 2 and Elden Ring runs deeper than that though. The way the player is orientated to the world is also a significant point of convergence. Generally in a FromSoftware game there is one obvious way forward, that may branch out later. The Undead Burg, The streets of Yharnham in Bloodborne and so on. The exact reverse is true of both Elden Ring and Dark Souls 2. There are multiple paths to take at the outset, which all converge later. Your typical Soulsborne game is like a tree. You begin by climbing the trunk and are given options on how to proceed nearer the top. Dark Souls 2 is like the same tree but turned upside d
Themes of mortality, or the cycle of life and death, are common to FromSoftware's games, and the fear of death brings with it a lot of unknowns. Elden Ring 's Godskins are even a faction of people dedicated to delivering Destined Death to gods, seeing themselves as keepers of the natural order. Elden Ring might have FromSoftware's worst starting area , but in regard to being unsettling, it may well be at the
Elden Ring is by far the best open-world role-playing game. For all of those who have yet to play, it without a doubt deserves all the praise it receives. This game is a true open-world adventure, as all the map can be accessed fairly early on. This free exploration can be both beautiful and the worst thing ever since players might get trapped somewhere impossibly hard.
The Legend of Zelda franchise very well may be the best fantasy gaming franchise to ever exist. While some may argue that Breath of the Wild isn't Zelda 's best game, there's no doubt that this game is one Elden Ring fans will love the most (though Twilight Princess is a great pick for a darker ga
If you've survived the initial arrow barrage, you can start making your way toward him while dodging any homing arrows he may decide to fire at you. Make sure to summon all the NPC phantoms you can as you approach him, as he is very difficult to engage by yourself at melee range. When you finally reach him, he will pull out his massive pair of Starscourge Greatswords and begin to attack you with fast, hard-hitting melee atta
[Warning: This article contains spoilers for Elden Ring .] Elden Ring is set in the Lands Between, a region that epitomizes the game's dark fantasy. The design of Elden Ring's open-world map set an example for other games, not only through being colossal in size and scope, but in providing mysterious secrets of lore, hidden story details, and a world that often feels encased by shadow. While the primary goal is to travel to the Erdtree and decide the future of the Elden Ring itself, players may find themselves far more enamored with uncovering the dark, horrific secrets that lie hidden through the game's wo
