Xennt’s position has always been that he has never known or cared to know what was hosted on his servers—a claim that German prosecutors believe is provably false, dark web darknet market urls and which they are currently attempting to unravel. Shortly afterward, eight people were charged with facilitating two hundred and forty-nine thousand criminal transactions. Through a two-year undercover operation led by an individual known to most users only as "Master Splyntr," we penetrated the highest levels of this group and identified and dark web sites located its leading members, which led to over 60 arrests worldwide and the prevention of tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars in economic loss. At its peak, the Darkmarket forum had over 2,500 members—spanning countries throughout the world—who were involved in buying and selling stolen financial information, including credit card data, login credentials (user names, passwords), best darknet market markets and equipment used to carry out certain financial crimes. DarkMarket also refers to a new darknet market founded in 2019 under the same name. "Illegal markets are not unique to any country and arise when there is illicit or contraband material available or when commerce is too impeded," said Curry. "Cyber terrorism, cyber stalking and money laundering activities go from incubation to delivery stages in a variety of darknet market channels daily.

A Marketplace of Contradictions

A German police unit in Mainz spent about five years spying on Xennt, using digital and phone taps as well as undercover officers—including a man employed as a gardener at the bunker complex. Angerer, a genial and unassuming man who specializes in prosecuting cybercrime, encouraged a police investigation into CyberBunker. Shortly after Xennt arrived in the Mosel Valley, his activities attracted the interest of a prosecutor named Jörg Angerer, who worked in the nearby city of Koblenz. The investigation of DarkMarket was spurred by another, much larger German police investigation into an organization called CyberBunker, which I wrote about in the magazine last year. The police referred to him only as Julian K. Shortly after Julian K.’s arrest, DarkMarket was shuttered by the German police. DarkMarket’s thirty-four-year-old founder and administrator was apparently an Australian man, who was arrested last weekend near the German-Danish border.

The original Agora Marketplace, which was a darknet market marketplace for illegal drugs and other illicit goods, was shut down in 2015 by law enforcement agencies. With over 500,000 users and 2,400 vendors, the marketplace was a major player in the darknet market economy. DarkMarket had nearly 500,000 users and more than 2,400 sellers, an official announcement from Europol on Tuesday said, calling it the "world’s largest largest illegal marketplace on the dark web."

The Darkmarket case also provides us with insight into cyber crime tradecraft. We also learned that the communication methods used by these criminals are, to them, a social outlet as well. In other words, having hired and trained special agents who can talk the talk, and given the resources to spend enough hours online for an extended period of time, we have found that almost any cyber criminal enterprise will begin to trust us, despite having never met us face-to-face. To the shock of criminals worldwide, Master Splyntr—who was on the site nearly everyday, participating anywhere from one hour to 15 hours a day—was a very dedicated and talented FBI special agent, of which we are proud and fortunate to have many. It had members worldwide who were involved in buying and selling stolen financial information, such as credit card data, login credentials, and equipment to carry out financial crimes.

The darkmarket is a paradox. It is a space of both profound risk and, for some, perceived safety. Its very architecture is designed to protect user identity through layers of encryption like Tor and cryptocurrencies for payment. This attracts a range of users, from those seeking privacy in oppressive regimes to those trading in outright illegality.
